Shanghai Declaration

Shanghai Declaration

30 March 2008

Based on the Resolution passed by the 4th World Conference of Theatre School Directors and the Resolution adopted by the 31st World Congress of the International Theatre Institute, in Manila, Philippines, in May 2006;

16 higher education theatre schools have come together, at the invitation of the UNESCO Chair of the International Theatre Institute, and of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, for the first Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of Theatre School Directors, and have considered this initiative to be opportune and useful to academic cooperation in the field of theatre.

These schools have come together to create two regional organisms:

- The Asia-Pacific Administration Board of the UNESCO Chair-ITI [APAB] as a representative of the International Administration Board of the UNESCO Chair-ITI for this region
- The Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau of the UNESCO Chair-ITI [APB], as a decentralized and executive structure of the UNESCO Chair-ITI in this region, based at Shanghai Theatre Academy.

The first Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of Theatre School Directors resolved that in June 2009, the Shanghai Theatre Academy and the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, Beijing, will co-host its first event tentatively named Asia Pacific Expo of Theatre Schools to include theatre productions, themed workshops, master classes, and research seminars. All member theatre schools have been invited to participate in any aspect. The Asia Pacific Expo of Theatre Schools will also include a regional conference where future plans and more details of its organization structures will be discussed and determined.

The participants in the first Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of Theatre School Directors consider that the main objectives of their future activities are the advancement of regional cooperation and the adaptation of the strategies and the programs of the UNESCO Chair-ITI to the cultural and academic specificity of the Asia-Pacific region.

The first Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of Theatre School Directors resolved to elect India’s National School of Drama, as Chair of The Asia-Pacific Administration Board of the UNESCO Chair-ITI [APAB] ;  China’s National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art, Indonesia Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta, Japan’s Toho Gakuen of Drama and Music, Korea’s National University of the Arts, as Vice Chairs of the APAB; Shanghai Theatre Academy as its Secretary General.

It further resolved to elect William Huizhu Sun of the Shanghai Theatre Academy as the Director of The Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau of the UNESCO Chair-ITI [APB], Gong Baorong of the Shanghai Theatre Academy as its Deputy Director and He Shouchang of the Shanghai Theatre Academy as its advisor.

The participants in the first Asia-Pacific Regional Conference of Theatre School Directors resolved to come together at least every two years, starting in June 2009, and passed a number of resolutions which will have great benefits to the quality of future theatre in the region.
