Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School is New Zealand’s foremost and largest dedicated training provider for the screen and dramatic arts. Our vision is to be a global leader for innovation in theatre and screen education and research. We are committed to excellence in teaching and leading. In particular Toi Whakaari’s aim is to ignite the creativity in each student and provide them with the skills of their craft to effectively tell the stories of their country and beyond.
Toi Whakaari offers degrees in Acting, Design for Stage and Screen and Performing Arts Management, a Masters degree in Directing and Diplomas in Entertainment Technology and Costume Construction.
Established 40 years ago we have grown hand in hand with the industry, employing practising professionals, enabling students to experience current best practice, while at the same time trialling processes and bringing innovation to the industry.
The school’s philosophy is to provide exceptionally talented students with the skills to apply their imagination and intelligence to the realities of a career in the performing arts. This requires dedication to excellence in training and continual striving to maintain the high standards the industry and students have come to expect. Our tutors are some of New Zealand’s most respected actors, technical specialists and directors.
The School caters for upwards of 150 pupils annually, who study for up to three years. We are a standalone Private Training Establishment, which is highly regarded both nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence for its screen and theatre training. Toi Whakaari meets its commitments to its students by equipping them for the demands and needs of the current industry as well as preparing them for a future career. Other institutions in New Zealand offer screen and arts training but none on this scale, with this range of courses, with the range of staff, state of the art facilities at Te Whaea: National Dance and Drama Centre, industry contacts and the expertise that Toi Whakaari provides.
Toi Whakaari has long been a leader of a bicultural framework in an educational environment. It is our long-term objective to explore the significance of biculturalism for the drama profession and the wider community in Aotearoa. We passionately believe this helps us create a better learning culture and produce practitioners who have a genuine sense of relationship and connectedness to their evolving artistic identity.
