On September 18,2008,9 people representing theatre schools from the Asian Pacific region who were attending the World Festival of Theatre Schools in Barcelona,Spain, convened as a follow-up of the first regional conference in late March in Shanghai. These attendees, including William Huizhu Sun of China’s Shanghai Theatre Academy,Du Changsheng of China’s National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, Soeprapto Soedjono of Indonesia’s ,Annie Ruth of the New Zealand Drama School, Richard Murphet of Australia’s Victoria College of Arts, Risako Ataka of Japan’s Toho Gakuen College of Drama and Music, Nick Lizaso of Philippine’s Ateneo de Manila University, Rahmat Amni of Iran’s Azad University Drama School, and Farin Zahedi of Iran’s University of Tehran, discussed preparations for the June 7-14, 2009, Asian Pacific Expo of Theatre Schools, especially one aspect of the Expo, choice of themes for themed workshops. We reached an agreement on two themes and related rules.
Instead of a title of a play or fiction, we have chosen two archetypal theatrical situations derived from various plays/stories in diverse cultures. Theme 1 is from a 13th century Chinese play Story of Chalk Circle as well as from Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle, in which a biological mother and an adoptive mother vie for a child. Variations of the story can also be found in the Koran and the Bible, which proves its universality. Theme 2 is from Romeo and Juliet, Story of West Chamber (also of 13th century China) and countless other plays, in which two young persons fall in love against the will of an authority figure, be it parent, teacher, or government. In each case, the interpretation and setting of the story line and style of rendition are completely open. But two conditions apply: 1) Cast size: 3 performers, who can play any number of characters; 2) Time: no more than 30 minutes.Attendees of the meeting also discussed two membership issues. 1) The New Zealand Drama School, which was not officially represented at the first APB conference in Shanghai due to scheduling problems but which expressed strong interest to join, is now a member of APB. 2) The two Iranian schools represented at the meeting are happy and welcomed to join APB. Both issues will be officially ratified at the Second APB Conference coinciding with the June, 2009, Theatre School Expo.
