The performance
At 19:15 on June 7, 2009, "Looking for the Son" by Korea National University of Arts was performed in the Black Box at STA.
Many students who watched the production said it was like the Korean TV dramas. Many Chinese people know about Korea as a nation which values family and daily life by watching Korean TV dramas. "Looking for the Son" also demonstrated the Korean features.
This is a musical comedy depicting the trivial and everlasting conflict between the mother and her daughter-in-law. The son was caught between his conflicting mother and wife and left home. He was then kidnapped by unicorns. The mother and her daughter-in-law united to save the son. Finally, the family was reunited. But the conflict started again when the daughter-in-law became a mother-in-law.
The character of unicorns made the drama more like a fairytale. They tested the relationship within the family. But the relationship is always typical generation after generation.
In the end of the drama, the family members sang a song of gratitude, again proving the love and respect of the Koreans for family.
For Chinese audience, the body actions and imagination of the typical story help them understand the plot.
The stage design of the drama is very simple. Several curtains and blocks are the whole environment for the actors. The actors performed with beautiful actions, abundant facial expressions and sweet voice.
