Peking Opera Version of “The Merry Wives of Windsor” 09/06/2009

On the night of June 8, the Peking opera version of “The Merry Wives of Windsor” created by students of Shanghai Theatre Academy was performed in the Academy Theatre. It is another attention-grabbing production in 2009 UNESCO Chair ITI Asian-Pacific Expo of Theatre Schools & Fifth Shanghai International Experimental Theatre Festival.

This production is the graduation play of Chinese Opera Directing, Music, and Makeup Class 05 of Shanghai Theatre Academy, College of Chinese Opera. It differs from traditional Chinese opera in that it mixes the exaggerate setting, European-style costumes, traditional drama lines and singing, speaking, action in Chinese opera. This bold innovation won the applause and laughter from the audience. They accepted the form and enjoyed the performance.
