Prof.Lewis from Weber State University Delivered a Speech in Shanghai Theatre Academy 12/12/2008


Students of STA warmly welcomed the visit of Prof.Gregory Lewis from Weber State University,who made an excellent speech on the topic of"Comparison between Chinese and American Films"on the afternoon of December 9.

The lecture began with the introduction of satirical films in the two nations in 1960s and 1970s.He then analyzed five outstanding and influential films,which were"Graduate(1967)","Bonnie and Clyde(1967)", "Little Big Man(1970)","The Hospital(1971)"and"Network(1975)".After that,he played some film clips and illustrated the difference by comparing them to Chinese films at the same age in context and means.Prof.Lewis mentioned in the lecture that films often included vivid time features and we could learn American issues especially social problems from its films.For example,the film"Graduation"revealed a kind of lost and apprehension of people from that age by defining the main character Robinson.

"Will you watch a film for the second,third time?"In terms of film reviews,Prof.Lewis stated his opinion in such a direct way and the listeners mostly agreed on it.Prof.Fang Fang and associate professor Zhao Wu present at the lecture also gave their views of satirical and anti-satirical films as well as the satire and dramatic features of films.Many students took an active part in the discussion.

Prof.Lewis wished to have a deeper communication with us and gave us his contact.The lecture ended in harmony.

After the lecture,with Prof.Fang Fang as the company,Prof. Lewis visited the experimental theatre and New Performance Space of our academy.And after a short break,Prof.Han Sheng,Executive Vice President of STA and Ma Linhong,Vice President of STA College of Continuing Education had a talk with Prof.Lewis on communication and cooperation.
